Secretion without full fusion
Article Abstract:
An experiment on exocytosis revealed that plasma and vesicular membrane fusion does not occur permanently. Amperometry techniques detected a reversible opening of a fusion pore on the cell surface area corresponding to a slow release of the neurotransmitter followed by bulk exocytosis. This observation may be true for smaller synaptic vesicles, with release occurring at a fraction of a millisecond.

Help fast from synapses
Article Abstract:
Neurobiologists B. Katz and his colleagues have managed to detail the signalling features of the mammalian synapse and report the first accurate measurements of the time course and size of both pre- and post-synaptic currents. They have also determined the number of calcium channels which need to open to release the contents of a vesicle into the synaptic left.

A network of fast-spiking cells in the neocortex connected by electrical synapses
Article Abstract:
Recording simultaneously from pairs of fast-spiking (FS) cells resulted in a type of gamma-aminobutryric acid (GABA)-containing neocortical interneuron. The high occurrence of electrical coupling amongst FS cells is reported, and communication via electrical synapses enables excitatory signalling amongst inhibitory cells, promoting their synchronous spiking.
