Predicting endemism from population structure of a widespread species: case study in Centaurea maculosa Lam. (Asteraceae)
Article Abstract:
Researchers studied amounts of genetic variability and differentiation among taxa and populations. They further studied populations sizes in five populations of Centaurea maculosa ssp. maculosa, six populations of C. corymbosa, and the single population of C. maculosa ssp. albida. They studied seventeen isozyme loci, nine of which were polymorphic. The study suggest that it is crucial to study closely related taxa in order to understand the population biology and evolution of rare species.

Comparative use of riparian corridors and oases by migrating birds in southeast Arizona
Article Abstract:
Corridors of oases and cottonwood-willow trees are essential to bird migrations in southeast Arizona. Migration data between 1989 and 1994 was analyzed to discover which species use given corridors. The band of riparian vegetation along the San Pedro River is a corridor for yellow-breasted chats, summer tanagers, and northern rough-winged swallows. Protecting small riparian environments in western landscapes is essential.

Role of corridors in plant dispersal: An example with the endangered Ranunculus nodiflorus
Article Abstract:
The role of corridors in seed dispersal, studying population genetic and demographic structure in metapopulations of the rare pond dwelling, autogamous plant species Ranunculus nodiflorus l. in the Fontainebleau Forest (France) is investigated. Corridors may be important for the regional persistence of the species and in addition alleviate the risks of local extinction through demographic stochasticity.
