Preparation of muscle samples for comparative electron microscopy
Article Abstract:
Scanning micrographs prepared by high-ice sublimation with freeze-fracturing and transmission electron micrographs were deemed satisfactory in studies of detail of inter- and intracellular structures and for measuring specific structures. Artifacts present with conventional techniques were avoided with the use of cryopreparation and low-temperature electron microscopy. Previously identified transverse structures viewed when prepared by fixative and freeze-fracturing and intermyofibrillar connections viewed when prepared by high-ice sublimation with cryoprotectant were deemed similar and identified as Z-disks.

The effect of live weight gain and live weight loss on body composition of Merino wethers: dissected muscle, fat, and bone
Article Abstract:
Merino wethers that underwent weight loss had heavier carcass weight, lower muscle proportion and increased fat proportion as compared to controls. Total side bone weight was higher only at 23.0-kilogram body weight. Thus, young sheep which undergo weight loss mobilize more weight from muscle than fat. These results are important in deciding whether animals that lost weight should be considered for marketing or kept for compensatory growth.

Anatomy dissected
Article Abstract:
The claims by A.M. Wenner and P.H. Wells, in their book 'Anatomy of a Controversy,' that recruited bees locate food sources solely through their sense of smell seems open to question, as it fails to dwell on the dance language hypothesis. The authors' strong bias against the notion that bees use information about distance and direction that is attained from bee dances has negated the utility of their work.
