Pressure to publish stifles young talent
Article Abstract:
The next Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) will be conducted on UK universities in 2001. Those departments that fail to retain ratings may results in loss of funding that could lead to redundancies. The pressure on universities to try and reach the set RAE targets is increasing, with the RAE committees requiring peer-reviewed publications as basic requirements for posts in universities. A survey of scientists in the field of molecular microbiology showed that few papers were produced during the first 10 years, meaning that the current RAE exercises would have precluded them from appointments to academic posts. However the scientists have initiated novel research and later publications reflect the large number of collaborations generated.
