Primary neurogenesis in Xenopus embryos regulated by a homologue of the Drosophila neurogenic gene Delta
Article Abstract:
The neurogenic gene, X-Delta-1, present in Xenopus is the homologue of the Delta gene in Drosophila and is expressed in a particular domain in the neural plate where all the cells are capable of forming neurons. This gene is expressed during primary neurogenesis and controls the process by lateral inhibition. Overexpression of this gene causes less cells to form primary neurons and underexpression results in more neurons. This gene is also expressed in the anterior neural plate, neurogenic placods and during the formation of secondary neurons.

Expression of a Delta homologue in prospective neurons in the chick
Article Abstract:
The structure of the gene C-Delta-1, present in chicks, is similar to the Delta gene present in Drosophila and different from vertebrate homologues of the Delta-related Serrate proteins. Studies show that this gene is expressed in prospective neuronal cells during neurogenesis and controls lateral inhibition to limit the number of neurons being formed. C-Delta-1 functions as a ligand for the chick Notch protein. The Delta/Notch signalling system is a universal system for controlling neurogenesis and has been conserved in vertebrates.
