Probable detection of starlight reflected from the giant planet orbiting tau Bootis
Article Abstract:
Observations of tau Bootis for a total of 48 hours in Apr 1998 and April 1999, May 1999 and Jun 1999 have led to the probable detection of Doppler-shifted starlight reflected from the planet known to orbit tau Bootis with a period of only a few days. The radius inferred for the planet is 1.8 times that of Jupiter, rather larger than the radii predicted by recent structural and evolutionary models. The candidate detection of starlight scattered from the atmosphere of an extrasolar planet boosts the case for the existence of giant, close-orbiting planets. These planets have so far only been inferred indirectly from the reflex motions of their parent stars.

Production of O2 on icy satellites by electronic excitation of low-temperature water ice
Article Abstract:
The temperature dependence of O2 production on icy satellites could be in the lifetime of the electronic excited states leading to dissociation of water molecules. It appears that changes in the local electronic structure are more significant than thermal diffusion for chemical processes in the electronic sputtering of ice. The process by which precursors are converted to O2 does not depend on temperature in the temperature range studied.
