The ABC of a versatile engine
Article Abstract:
Hung and colleagues have described the structure of Salmonella typhimurium's histidine permease nucleotide-binding domain (NBD). Each domain in S. typhimurium is encoded by different genes. NBD engines can power a variety of machines, and the structure reported may apply to the NBD's of several eukaryotic ABC transporters. Histidine permease contains two MSDs and two identical NBDs (HisP and HisJ).

Ion channels lose the rhythm
Article Abstract:
The ventricular arrhythmias in congenital long-QT (LQT) syndrome appear to be caused by genetic mutations that alter ion channel function. LQT syndrome is characterized by blackouts and can result in sudden death in young, apparently healthy individuals. Potassium channel activity is altered by mutations in the HERG gene and sodium channel abnormalities are caused by a mutation in the SCN5A gene.
