Progress in plant protection
Article Abstract:
The status of endangered plant species have greatly improved due to recovery efforts of government agencies. From merely four listed species in 1977, plants now comprise 55% of the country's 960 endangered species. Unlike animals, plants are easier to conserve because they are not migratory. Plant reproduction is also less complicated than animal reproduction. Habitat loss and modification are blamed for driving plants on the verge of extinction.

Looking back, forging ahead
Article Abstract:
Recovery efforts provided under the Endangered Species Act have successfully prevented the extinction of 99% of endangered species. The 1994 Fish and Wildlife Service Report to Congress reveals that 58% of species listed in 1968-1973 have become stable or have improved in their natural habitats. The success of recovery programs is also shown by the improvement of status of listed species resulting in reclassification of species status.

Two decades of change
Article Abstract:
Public understanding of the threats to biological diversity has been achieved since the launching of the Endangered Species Bulletin in 1976. Other developments include the more efficient identification of endangered and threatened species and the increased participation of government agencies in conservation agreements. Implementation of the Endangered Species Act has shifted its focus from individual species to the ecosystem.
