Supercollider creates a field of dreams for luring high-energy physicists to Texas
Article Abstract:
The Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) will boost the Texas economy and provide high-energy physicists with many opportunities for employment, but only if the federal government decides that the massive project is worthy of funding. The SSC, envisioned as the world's largest proton-antiproton collider, is supposed to begin operating in 1999 when it will give physicists unprecedented research capabilities. The chance to take part in this exciting prospect has brought many physicists to Texas. However, doubts about the SSC's feasibility may cause the government to deny the $650 million budgeted for it.

NIH takes Stewart and Feder off the misconduct beat
Article Abstract:
The National Institutes of Health has reassigned scientists Ned Feder and Walter Stewart and ordered them to end their investigations of plagiarism by prominent scientists in scientific papers. The two scientists' biophysical histology laboratory at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases has been disbanded. The decision was explained in terms of cost-cutting and irrelevance of the investigations to biomedical research. Feder and Stewart plan to appeal the decision, but it is not clear whether they will receive strong support.
