Pten dependence distinguishes haematopoietic stem cells from ileukaemia-initiating cells
Article Abstract:
The effect of Pten deletion on leukaemia-initiating cells and normal haematopoietic stem cell (HSCs) are examined to find the possibility to identify therapies that eliminate cancer stem cells without eliminating normal stem cells in the same tissues. PTEN (phosphatase and tensin homologue) is a phosphatase that negatively regulates singnalling through the phosphatidylinositol-3-OH kinase (PI(3)K) pathway, inhibiting proliferation and survival.

Increasing [p16.sup.ink4a] expression decreases forebrain progenitors and neurogenesis during ageing
Article Abstract:
A study shows that progenitor proliferation in the subventricular zone and neurogenesis in the olfactory bulb, as well as multipotent progenitor frequency and self-renewal potential, all decline with age in the mouse forebrains. The declines in progenitor frequency and function are found to correlate with increased expression of [p16.sup.ink4a], which encodes a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor linked to ageing.
