Publish in English, or perish?
Article Abstract:
Lichenologist Claude Roux claims that the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), France's largest research group, refused to grant him promotion because he had not published his work in English. Roux insists that CNRS's action was part of a deliberate program aimed at forcing French scientists to write in English. Although Roux's case has yet to be resolved legally, the French government wants to require inclusion of publishing in when judging researchers' work. The government also wants to start a multilingual research journal.

A speeded-up plan to spread the wealth
Article Abstract:
France's government will move over 2,500 public-sector researchers from Paris to regional centers between 1992 and 1995 to hasten the planned decentralizing of research agencies. Specifically, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), the country's largest research organization, will shift about 2,700 employees to various regional locations by 2000. CNRS hopes that the decentralization will establish research 'poles,' that is, loose federations of laboratories conducive to research.

Eureka welcomes first East European member
Article Abstract:
Hungary is the first East European country to join Eureka, the EC's high-technology program. Eureka's decision to extend full membership to Hungary was made public at a meeting in Tampere, Finland in May, 1992. Full membership is expected to greatly expand Hungary's involvement in Eureka's ongoing projects, which have the general goal of assisting companies in obtaining government financial backing for joint research on high-technology.
