Questions for Clinton's inauguration
Article Abstract:
Bill Clinton should make good on his commitment to basic research after he takes office on Jan 20, 1993. His appointment of the well-qualified John Gibbons to be chief science advisor is a commendable start in that direction, but Clinton has also made disturbing comments about the need to shore up US competitiveness. The worry is that this short-sighted emphasis on US economic leadership may provide a pretext for cuts in government support for fundamental science. This is not the sort of change Clinton should pursue.

Clinton emphasizes technology over science in choosing advisers for presidential campaign
Article Abstract:
Bill Clinton has surrounded himself with scientific advisors with an affinity for technology development over basic research. None of those in his campaign circle who are involved in forming Clinton's positions on science policy are professional scientists themselves. While Gore has long been concerned with science and technology issues, Clinton's interest in technology is for the sake of economic development. Funding of technology development will increase if Clinton wins the election.

Clinton plans offer hints of technology agenda
Article Abstract:
President-elect Bill Clinton's policy on federal aid to research and development will probably stress work on immediately useful technologies rather than on fundamental research. Although Clinton has said little about what policies he will favor once he is inaugurated, most observers believe he regards technological innovation as essential to reviving the economy. Consequently, Clinton is seeking a science advisor with experience doing research for private industry.
