Research institute on company lines
Article Abstract:
Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry Dir. Lin Guo-Qiang has implemented a private sector approach to management to enhance the institute's role in the research community. The approach has already helped the institute close several technology transfer contracts with foreign companies and generate funds to finance renovations and new equipment. All employees of the institute are required to have a magnetic identification system, which they use every time they enter a facility to ensure confidentiality of information.

A nanotube laboratory
Article Abstract:
Bachtold and colleagues have observed the Aharonov-Bohm effect in a single carbon nanotube. They attached metal leads to multiwalled tubes and found conductance oscillations corresponding to the metallic cylinder theory. They also found extra oscillations with a smaller period that corresponded to electron paths revolving around the cylinder many times before interfering. Such oscillations could represent the underlying nature of orbitals in the nanotube.
