Role of duplicate genes in genetic robustness against null mutations
Article Abstract:
Duplication of genes protects organisms from the effects of gene deletion, and deletion of genes for which there is no duplicate is more often expressed by the organism, according to researchers in the US. Deletion of a gene that has no duplicate can sometimes be masked by alternative metabolic pathways, regulatory networks, etc. In Saccharaomyces cerevisiae, at least 25% of gene deletions that have no phenotype are compensated by duplicate genes.

Worming into genetic instability
Article Abstract:
Mutations in roundworms seemed to be rare but a new study on the roundworms found at least ten times more mutations than anticipated. This makes us wonder whether genomes are inherently less stable than previously suspected.

Duplication, duplication
Article Abstract:
Duplicated genes are common, probably in order to provide functionality in case one gene malfunctions. Deleting single or duplicated genes in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae helps determine the functions of the genes.
