'Rough draft' of human genome wins researchers' backing
Article Abstract:
Publicly funded researchers working on the human genome aim to create a 'rough draft' which could allow other researchers to apply newly found data more rapidly. The idea is supported by National Human Genome Research director, Francis Collins. The proposal involves a speeding up of the shotgun phase which will need a rise in the sequencing capacity of the government. A high-quality rough draft could be completed by 2001. Some sequencers are concerned that the proposal could be a distraction away from the main aim of finalizing an accurate sequence by 2005.

US urged to monitor some genetic tests
Article Abstract:
The Working Group on the Ethical, Legal and Social Implications of Human Genome Research urged the government to develop stringent rules that will regulate genetic testing. The 15-member task force which was established by the National Institutes of Health also proposed the formation of a National Genetics Board that will evaluate or regulate genetic testing together with FDA. Furthermore, the expert panel also recommended several requirements that will enhance the quality standard of commercial laboratories that provide genetic testing services.

'Group debate' urged for gene studies
Article Abstract:
The National Bioethics Advisory Commission is establishing recommendations regarding informed consent and the ethical use of tissue samples. It is though that the commission will indicate that researchers in genetic studies should be obliged to undertake 'community consultation' before beginning a trial that could place groups in danger. Mark Sobel, chief of the National Cancer Institute's molecular pathology section, believes that it would be hard to define a community.
