Scaled-down Cluster mission aims for relaunch in 1999
Article Abstract:
The relaunch of the Cluster satellite mission in 1999 depends on the approval of European Space Agency's science program committee for a scaled-down plan. The project will consist of its original spare satellite, Phoenix, and three smaller identical satellites and will be cost restricted to $166 million. The relaunch may affect the Horizons 2000 program of a mission to Mercury, an interferometry observatory, and collaborations such as the Hubble space telescope and the Next Generation Space Telescope. Significant participation is expected in the latter parts of the program.

Cluster relaunch looks to minisatellites
Article Abstract:
The destruction of the European Space Agency's (ESA) four satellites of Cluster mission on board the Ariane-5 launcher has generated a controversy over the launching of the back-up satellite Phoenix. Some members of the ESA's Science Programme Committee urge its immediate launch to prevent the deterioration of its instruments. The ESA plans to launch cheaper minisatellites, along with Phoenix, with the financial help of member states to save its commitment to the International Solar Terrestrial Programme.
