Rufus Jaeger was head of the Quantum Optics Group at the University of Wentbridge, and he was selected for a unique honor to give a plenary lecture inaugurating the World Year of Physics. A mathematical analysis of a pendulum system reveals the relevance to quantum systems of the classical concept of 'monodromy'. A cat is used which dramatizes monodromy through its ability of always landing on its feet.
