Scientists split over tobacco industry research funding
Article Abstract:
The Medical Research Council's decision to accept funds from BAT industries for nicotine-related research has triggered extreme reactions amongst the scientific community. Some research scientists have voiced support for industry-sponsored research provided scientists retain total control over funds deployment and publication of the research results. Other scientists favor the funding of nicotine-related research from outside the tobacco industry, as sponsoring industries are more likely to benefit from any positive results obtained.

Tobacco and researchers' rights
Article Abstract:
Two British scientists' decision to accept funds from the British American Tobacco industries for nicotine-related research, has again provoked fears of the abuse of scientific data by tobacco companies. The acceptance of nicotine-tainted money was inevitable due to the paucity of other funds. This deal may serve as a model for other scientists opting to collaborate with industrial sponsors. Critics fear the worst as influential sponsors might be tempted to block/control the research results or misuse them for their own purpose.

UK redraws medical research funding
Article Abstract:
The Medical Research Council (MRC) in Britain is changing its method of funding to encourage long-term, major multi-disciplinary research in biomedical sciences. There is a plan to phase out stand-alone project grants, with funding being reduced from October. The MRC will abolish the existing six grant application committees, replacing them with a 200 member advisory board. The commitment to response mode funding has been welcomed, but concern has been expressed about the phasing out of stand alone project funding.
