Secondary use of aspen cavities by tree-roosting big brown bats
Article Abstract:
The use of roost sites by bats and the factors that influence roost selection are ill understood, with most previous research focused on those temperate insectivorous bats which roost in human structures. A new study investigates which physical characteristics are preferred by the big brown bat for roosts. The bats in Cypress Hills Provincial Park, SK, exclusively roost in cavities of the trembling aspen despite the availability of conifers. Details of the study are presented.

Short-term effects of small-scale habitat disturbance on activity by insectivorous bats
Article Abstract:
A new study investigates the effect of small-scale habitat disturbance on the activity of insectivorous bats. The bats' response to tree harvesting and construction of a forest access road was recorded with ultrasonic detectors. It is suggested that small-scale habitat disturbances may be beneficial to insectivorous bats, providing them with foraging areas and flight corridors.

Urban maternity-roost selection by bid brown bats in Colorado
Article Abstract:
The roost selection by big brown bats in Colorado is analyzed by comparing variables for known maternity roosts and randomly selected buildings at microhabitat. The variables for urban roosting were found to be analogous to that of maternity roosts in natural habitats.
