Helping non-relatives: a role for deceit?
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the nesting and parental behavior in birds showed an extreme form of adoption called 'kidnapping,' where adults herd the young of other pairs into their own territories. The behavior is attributed to the formation of a 'social bond' between non-related recipient and adoptee groups. The bond is a mechanism of kinship deceit that is formed when the unrelated young is fed by the non-related adult, which later causes the young offer assistance to the adult. High mortality has been observed in these type of relationships.

The detection of and responses to experimental intraspecific brood parasitism in eastern kingbirds
Article Abstract:
An experiment exploring the detection of and responses to experimental intraspecific brood parasitism in eastern kingbirds was conducted using 10 parasitic eggs. Results indicate that kingbirds accepted foreign eggs if they were of the same species even if they looked different from their own eggs, but eggs of other species were rejected. Patterns of acceptance do not vary with the egg-laying cycle.
