Attention improves or impairs visual performance by enhancing spatial resolution
Article Abstract:
A critical test of the resolution hypothesis predicting that attention can enhance spatial resolution, is presented. It was hypothesized that performance would be improved where the resolution is too low, but would be impaired where resolution is too high for the task. It is concluded that visual attention facilitation may involve a combination of mechanisms including noise reduction, signal enhancement and decisional factors.

Restricted attentional capacity within but not between sensory modalities
Article Abstract:
Research suggests that auditory attention to a simple target is not restricted by simultaneous visual attention to another target. Concurrent awareness and attention are shown to have a modality-specific restriction. It look several hundred milliseconds to identify two targets within two auditory or visual streams, although there was no such interference in identifying targets in different modalities.
