Shot prevalences and diets of diving ducks five years after ban on use of lead shotshells at Catahoula Lake, Louisiana
Article Abstract:
A new study of diving ducks at Catahoula Lake, LA, investigates the prevalence of ingested lead shot. The two species of duck, canvasbacks and the lesser scaup, have different foraging behaviour but there was a similar prevalence of shot, suggesting that the birds actively selected shot as grit. Despite different hunting regulations for the two species, the incidence of embedded lead shot was similarly low, conflicting with previous studies.

Winter survival of immature canvasbacks in inland Louisiana
Article Abstract:
The survival rate and mortality of canvasbacks were studied. Specifically, 172 canvasbacks at Catahoula Lake, LA, were radio-tagged during the winters of 1991-94 to investigate the relationship between blood lead levels and body mass. The results, which indicated lower survival rates for lead-exposed canvasbacks in winter, also identified the causes of mortality. These were gunshots, lead toxicosis, drowning in fishing nets and unknown.

Responses of plants and arthropods to burning and disking of riparian habitats
Article Abstract:
Plant and arthropods responses to burning and disking of riparian grasslands were evaluated. Results concluded burning, disking to be effective management options for maintaining as well as enhancing riparian grasslands for wildlife.
