Article Abstract:
Studies of determinants in the productivity of phytoplankton are discussed with reference to the effect of silica. The effect of silica which influences the composition of phytoplankton on the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is discussed.

Resolving the 'opal paradox' in the Southern Ocean

Opals in the Southern Ocean have high sedimentation rates but low primary production rates. However, new research reveals that opal preservation in the Southern Ocean is not high and the two measurements need to be brought closer together.
