Single-shell carbon nanotubes of 1-nm diameter
Article Abstract:
Hitherto scarce single-shell carbon nanotubes form abundantly in the gas phase in carbon-arc reactor chambers. Research on tubules of one-nanometer diameter confirms the helical arrangement of carbon hexagons previously deduced from multi-shell tubes. No iron particles were apparent at the tubule tips, but iron probably acts as a catalyst in the vapor phase; argon and methane also seem necessary. Single-shell tubes may be embryo for multi-shell ones.

Carbon nanotubes as nanoscale mass conveyors
Article Abstract:
Carbon nanotubes, with their hollow cores and large aspect ratios, are suggested as possible conduits for nanoscale amounts of material. The achievement of controllable, reversible atomic scale mass as the prototype transport species is reported.

Peeling and sharpening multiwall nanotubes
Article Abstract:
Issues are presented concerning the importance of ease of shaping of multiwall carbon nanotubes which are used as scanned and biological probes. Techniques of peeling and sharpening are discussed.
