Singular take on molecules
Article Abstract:
The first conference on single molecule biophysics took place in Tours, France, in Jul 1999. Participants discussed a wide range of issues, including the use of DNA to investigate the dynamic behaviour and elasticity of polymers and the use of advanced optical probes for the direct tracking of cellular processes and ion-channel activity. It was emphasized that physicists must tackle biology in order to identify the most relevant biological issues.

Andre Weil, 1906-1998
Article Abstract:
Andre Weil was a mathematician who worked at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, from 1958 until a few years prior to his death in 1998. He initially worked as a mathematician, and then as an historian of the subject. He came from France, and studied at the Ecole normale superieure from the age of 16-years-old. He infused number theory with notions from modern geometry and he and his disciples reworked the basics of algebraic geometry.

Alberto P. Calderon (1920-98): Mathematician and master of singular integrals
Article Abstract:
Alberto Calderon was a mathematician and pioneer in the the areas of Fourier analysis and partial differential equations. He was born in Argentina and educated in Switzerland. He began his career as an engineer, but was persuaded to study mathematics by mentor Antoni Zygmund. He worked with Zygmund on the theory of singular integrals, which became known as the Calderon-Zygmund theory.
