Sources of the Maelstrom
Article Abstract:
The Lofoten Maelstrom on the northern coast of Norway was first described in old Nordic tales. The first written account of this strong tidal current, which is associated with dangerous whirlpools, was probably that by Olaus Magnus in the 16th century. Recent research on this subject has led to the development of a high-resolution depth-integrated tidal model with a 0.5 km grid size. This has made it possible to study the transition of the tide from a northwards progressive wave on the outer shelf to standing oscillations in the fjords.

Swimming against the current: Animal behaviour
Article Abstract:
Fishes and amphibians respond to currents, and Montgomery and colleagues have found evidence a class of lateral-line receptors is involved in this behavioural response, known as rheotaxis. They found that when two classes of neuromast activity were blocked, fish could respond to a water current, only when the velocity was high. When just the activity of the canal neuromasts were blocked, fishes displayed the same rheotatic threshold behaviour as control fishes.

Surface effects of bottom-generated turbulence in a shallow tidal sea
Article Abstract:
The surface effects of bottom-generated turbulence in a tidally influenced and well mixed area of the North Sea were observed using acoustic and visual images. 20-30% of the water surface is found to be affected by circular areas of local upwelling, and the individual boils persist for around 7 minutes, having the appearance of eddies. They contribute to the replacement of surface waters from depth in instratified waters.
