South African government rejects AZT advice
Article Abstract:
It is thought that two reports commissioned by the South African government from the country's Medicines Control Council support the use of the anti-retroviral drug AZT (zidovudine). The government has decided to reject these reports, and is not willing to reveal their contents at present. Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Misimang has stated that the National AIDS Council will set up five technical task teams with responsibilities matching the priorities of the national AIDS strategic plan adopted in Jan 2000. However, the government continues to attract strong criticism from AIDS activists.

South Africa stands firm on AIDS drug...
Article Abstract:
The International AIDS Society has not been successful in persuading the South African government to reverse its decision not to fund a pilot scheme administering the antiviral agent AZT to HIV-positive pregnant women. The country's Health Ministry believes that the pilot scheme would foster unmeetable expectations if funds were not available to pay for a full-scale implementation. Opponents of this stance argue that it is more cost-effective to fund treatment with AZT than to treat HIV-positive babies.

US scientists may boycott AIDS congress
Article Abstract:
Researchers may boycott the World AIDS Congress to be held in 18 months time in Durban in protest against the South African health minister Nkosazana Zuma's decision to abandon a proposed pilot scheme to administer AZT, an antiviral agent to HIV-positive pregnant women. Trials have suggested that giving AZT during the last four weeks of pregnancy and during labour can halve the transmission of HIV to the child. However the programme has been axed as funds are not available at provincial level.
