Spatial use by wintering greater white-fronted geese relative to a decade of habitat change in California's Central Valley
Article Abstract:
The effect of recent habitat changes in California's Central Valley on wintering Pacific greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifron frontalis) is investigated by comparing roost-to-feed distances, distributions, populations range sizes, and habitat use during 1987-1990 and 1998-2000. The habitat changes comprised wetland restoration and agricultural and enhancement due to the 1990 implementation of the Central Valley Joint Venture, increased land area used for rice (Oryza sativa) production, and the practice of flooding, rather than burning, rice straw residues for decomposition because of burning restrictions enacted in 1991.

Survival of adult female northern pintails in Sacramento Valley, California
Article Abstract:
A study has been conducted to estimate winter survival of North American populations of northern pintails by measuring the size of pintails in late summer in Sacramento Valley, CA. Pintails survived winter at a relatively high rate, but had no differences in survival rate by body mass. There were also no differences in the hunting and nonhunting mortality rate among years and within years in the pintail populations. The common causes of mortality were legal hunting, illegal shooting, predation and diseases.

Pintail and mallard survival in California relative to habitat, abundance, and hunting
Article Abstract:
The impact of habitat, abundance and hunting on winter survival of female pintails and mallards in California are examined. Habitat conservation and a favorable wintering environment are suggested for low natural mortality rates of the waterfowl.
