Specific role of mitochondrial electron transport in blood-stage Plasmodium falciparum
Article Abstract:
Erythrocytic stages of the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum have maintained an active mitochondiral electron transport chain to serve one metabolic function, such as the regeneration of ubiquinone required as the electron acceptor for dihydroorotate dehydrogenase. The results have shown that the acquisition of just one enzyme can provide mitochondrial electron transport nonessential in erythrocytic stages of Plasmodium falciparum.

A hydrogenosome with a genome
Article Abstract:
Evidence for the existence of a hydrogenosomal genome of mitochondrial descent is provided, and it is demonstrated that Nycthotherus ovalis, an anaerobic heterotrichous ciliate, found in the hindgut of cockroaches, has a new type of iron-only hydrogenase enzyme. A fragment of an SSU rRNA gene from N. ovalis was isolated and cloned, and a nuclear-encoded cDNA was identified, encoding a putative (Fe)-hydrogenase.

An anaerobic mitochondrion that produces hydrogen
Article Abstract:
The hydrogenosomes of the anaerobic ciliate Nyctotherus ovalis, which thrives in the hindgut of cockroaches, have retained a rudimentary genome encoding components of a mitochondrial electron transfer chain. The N. ovalis hydrogenosome is sensitive to inhibitors of mitochondrial complex I and produces succinate as a major metabolic end product-biochemical traits typical of anaerobic mitochondria.
