Spiderweb smokescreens: spider trickster uses background noise to mask stalking movements
Article Abstract:
A study of the stalking behavior of four species of the Portia spider shows that they take advantage of the prey spiders' distraction resulting from environmental disturbances when jumping on them. All the four species advanced further during disturbances, a behavior called "opportunistic smokescreen behavior." Portia uses this behavior only against spiders and not against other prey. The success of this predatory tactic lies in the prey's inability to sense Portia's stalking movements due to the disturbances.

Araneographic jumping spiders discriminate between detour routes that do and do not lead to prey
Article Abstract:
the detouring ability of the tropical salicid, Portia fumbriata, was analyzed via 12 laboratory set-ups to determine the mechanics of the salticid visual system. Analysis of detour route selection by Portia fumbriata indicated the absence of simple decision rules or set patterns of route discrimination. However, detour route discrimination by araneographic jumping spiders was significantly affected by the time of the day in which the experiment was conducted.

Interacting effects of size and prior injury in jumping spider conflicts
Article Abstract:
The interacting effects of size difference and prior loss of forelegs on the ability of males to win intrasexual conflicts in Trite plainceps, a New Zealand jumping spider is investigated. Investigation used inverse prediction from logistic regression models to quantify the size advantage that is sufficient to offset the disadvantage of prior injury.
