Stable phytoplankton community structure in the Arabian Sea over the past 200,000 years
Article Abstract:
The biomarkers dinosterol, brassicasterol, alkenones and chlorins give an insight into changes in ocean production in the northeastern Arabian Sea over the past 200,000 years. Concordant concentration maxima of these biomarkers correspond with organic carbon maxima in a sediment core from the region. It has been established that the relative contributions of diatoms and dinoflagellates to production were largely stable on timescales larger than between 3,000 years and 4,000 years over the past 200,000 years. A change in the structure of the planktonic community has not been the reason for the substantial change in the rate of marine production over the last six climate cycles.

Drifting into art
Article Abstract:
The exhibition "Plankton in Art", from 6-8 February 2007 in Sante Fe, New Mexico, has paid homage to ninth-century biologist Ernst Haeckel's illustrations, which has included the photography of Guido Mocafico, as well as items of jewellery, glass and quilting. The British fashion embroiderer Karen Nicol's work "Called Out of the Blue into the Black", sponsored by the oil company Shell, is also a part of this exhibition.

Palaeoceanographic implications of genetic variation in living North Atlantic Neogloboquadrina pachyderma
Article Abstract:
Neogloboquadrina pachyderma is a very good tool for reconstructing glacial-interglacial climate conditions in the North Atlantic Ocean. The need to genetically investigate other important morphospecies to refine their accuracy and reliability as palaeoceanographic proxies is highlighted.
