Striving for coherence
Article Abstract:
Rodriguez and colleagues and Miltner and colleagues have investigated the temporal coherence of electroencephalographic (EEG) signals recorded from people undertaking cognitive tasks. The studies focused on the gamma frequency range, centered around 40 Hz. They show that local oscillatory responses may synchronize over different cortical areas, providing further evidence that synchronization can enable the selective association of distributed neurons.

A homeostatic switch
Article Abstract:
Homeostatic fixed points can change and Rivera and colleagues have determined a molecule that could be responsible for the changes in signalling between neurons that release GABA and their target cells from positive to negative. They suggest that a change from depolarizing to hyperpolarizing actions may occur early in the development of cells, controlled by glycine, a major inhibitory neurotransmitter.

The eyes have it!
Article Abstract:
Motion anticipation is now shown to begin at the retina, following from current models of retinal processing, according to Berry and colleagues. Rabbits and salamanders were shown to have motion anticipation, and that directionally selective cells did not directly participate in motion anticipation. Such basic mechanisms are common in many species in many phases of the primate visual systems.
