Resource presence and operational sex ratio as determinants of copulation duration in the fly Rhagoletis juglandis
Article Abstract:
The dynamics of mating traits are known to be influenced by the distribution of essential resources and operational sex ratio (OSR), but the effects of interaction between a resource and OSR have been little researched. A new study of the tephritid fly Rhagoletis juglandis investigates whether the effect of OSR in nature is moderated wholly or partly by an effect of resource presence on copulation. Results show that fruit presence and female-biased sex ratios are linked to shorter copulations. Details of the study are presented.

The cost of peripheral males in a brook trout mating system
Article Abstract:
Peripheral males among brook trout may be involved in more than half of spawnings. Large females tend to attract more of these males. Female trout may wait for a larger male, delaying egg release if they are with a small male. The young of large female brook trout also tend to be large, so there are benefits to males in selecting larger females. Larger males are better able to defend eggs and prevent them from being eaten. There are mating costs for both females and males that arise from peripheral males.
