The author discusses the study of the natural substances such as sea shells and bones. The topics include the analysis of the mechanical properties and the structures of these substances, and the steps towards creation of the synthetic materials which would mimic the structures of the naturally occurring materials.

The authors have investigated mitochondrial outer membrane. They report that this membrane contains an assembly and sorting machinery operating after outer membrane translocase.
