Task force turns on sponsor (DoE)
Article Abstract:
A high-level task force summoned by the US Department of Energy (DoE) charges the DoE with mismanagement of the ten national laboratories under its control. The task force suggests the bureaucracy and the lack of credibility of the department as possible causes of decline in the maintenance of the laboratories. It has recommended corporatization of the national laboratories that will detach them from the direct control of the DoE.

Adhesive force of a single gecko foot-hair
Article Abstract:
A single gecko foot-hair is 10 time more effective at adhesion than predicted from maximal estimates on whole animals. A macroscopic orientation and preloading of the foot-hair boosts attachment force 600-fold above that of frictional measurements of the material.
