The European pharmaceutical outlook
Article Abstract:
Pharmaceutical companies in Europe are increasingly supporting basic research at universities and private institutions. Since most easily exploited drug targets have been used, less accessible systems such as the brain must be plumbed to develop new drugs. This requires more basic research which is most efficiently done in universities and private research institutions. There are numerous arrangements by which the drug companies try to insure their rights to discoveries they have funded. Some companies spend as much as 20% of sales on research and development.

US spent-fuel ban leaves European research reactors out in the cold
Article Abstract:
A South Carolina court has ruled against the acceptance by the US Department of Energy (DOE) of spent fuel rods from European research reactors for storage at the DOE's nuclear site at Savannah River. The ban on the agreement between the US and foreign nuclear companies, known as the Reduced Enrichment for Research and Test Reactors Agreement, has resulted in a crisis among European research reactors facing shortage of temporary storage facilities. The agreement has come under criticism on environmental grounds.

European nations to collaborate on flood research
Article Abstract:
Four European countries, along with the European Commission, have proposed research programs focussed on the Rhine floods. Initiated by the Netherlands, the programs will model the basins of the two rivers, the Rhine and the Meuse, whose flooding threatens northern Europe. The research will promote the navigability of the rivers and the improvement of building methods of dikes that are most threatened by the rivers.
