The Pas2 protein essential for peroxisome biogenesis is related to ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes
Article Abstract:
The gene for the PAS2 protein of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been cloned and sequenced for the first time. This protein, along with the closely related PAS1 and PAS3 proteins, controls the biogenesis and growth of peroxisomes. The PAS2 gene includes the code for a new ubiquitin-conjugating protein (UBC). Moreover, the discovery that a UBC cysteine residue has a site-directed mutagenesis that causes mutant PAS2 proteins to be unable to complement pas2 mutant strains indicates that PAS2's main role is as a UBC enzyme.
