The early years
Article Abstract:
The Boone and Crockett Club, formed in 1887 by the wealthy hunters of New York City, aimed to protect the big game animals of North America. The club was later named New York Zoological Society, with Theodore Roosevelt as its president. With 275 acres from the city, it was the biggest zoo in the world. It had an initial collection of 843 animals of 157 species. All the hunters worked in the zoo, and this inspired them to give up hunting.
