The fate of tropical forests: A matter of stewardship
Article Abstract:
Brazil is a land of immigrants, newcomers emanating from Europe, Africa, and Asia but they have ignored the Amazon's indigenous inhabitants in their quests for land and wealth. The role of rural and indigenous people as stewards of the land and its natural resources is highlighted and it is noticed that the attitudes of people are changing positively towards the forest preservation.

Effects of the Surrounding Matrix on Tree Recruitment in Amazonian Forest Fragments
Article Abstract:
Matrixes with Cecropia- and Vismia-dominated regrowth were compared for pioneer tree species recruitment in the Amazon region. Pioneer tree population density was significantly higher in the Vismia regrowth plots, indicating the importance of surrounding matrices on tree recruitment.
