The importance of systematic biology in defining units of conservation
Article Abstract:
Any unit of conservation defined only in terms of adaptation is probably going to underestimate biological diversity. The frequency of different modes of speciation has been estimated for three groups of vertebrates in an investigation of systematic biology and its importance in the defining of units of conservation. Allopatric speciation varied in the three groups but was important in two of them. Principles of systematic biology have not been integrated completely into the practice and principles of conservation biology. Some present units of conservation emphasize primarily just one of the processes, adaptation, but a number of evolutionary processes contribute to diversification of lineages.

Distinct population segments and congressional intent: Reply to Waples
Article Abstract:
The legislative and management history of distinct population segments (DPSs) from the United States Endangered Species Act (ESA) is reviewed. The study shows that the U.S. Congress recognized cases in which the protection of biodiversity was best accomplished by the separate listing of populations within an evolutionary unit.

Correlations among Extinction Risks Assessed by Different Systems of Threatened Species Categorization
Article Abstract:
An evaluation of three different systems for calculating species extinction threat levels is presented. Positive correlations among the threat rankings were found among the three systems, and the rankings are linked with predicted risk of extinction.
