The neocortex comes together
Article Abstract:
A key premise of a meeting on the evolutionary developmental biology of the cerebral cortex was that information from developmental neurobiology assists in understanding how the neocortex evolved. Evidence was presented that early expression of a homeobox gene named emx-1 differs between parts of the dorsal ventricular ridge (DVR) and the temporal neocortex. This suggests that the DVR and lateral neocortex are not homologous structures. A rise in the number of Cajal-Retzius cells could have been significant for transformation of the dorsal cortex to neocortex.

Radial mosaicism and tangential cell dispersion both contribute to mouse neocortical development
Article Abstract:
A study of the pattern of dispersion of progenitor cells of the mammalian neocortex is reported. The study used transgenic mice in which about half of the brain cells had been colored by a transgene. The results showed that some cells were radially dispersed, giving rise to diffuse bands of similar cells. Superimposed upon the radially arranged cells are tangentially arranged cells which do not follow clonal borders. These results show that both radial mosaicism and tangential cell migration are involved in cortical specification.

Neurons derived from radial glial cells establish radial units in neocortex
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the use of time-lapse images to reveal the generation of neurons by proliferate radial glia. The radial organization of the neocortex of the brain is discussed.
