The relationship between the hen and chick, Gallus gallus domesticus: the hen's recognition of the chick
Article Abstract:
A study on the hen's ability to distinguish between her own chicks and alien chicks of thesame age was conducted. The results indicated that hens failed to discriminate between her own chicks and alien chicks of the same color. However, when the hens were introduced to her own brood and another brood of a different color, they preferred to spend more time with their own chicks. This led to the conclusion that the hen's ability to distinguish is restrained to her ability to recognize the color of her brood.
