The response of water voles, Arvicola terrestris, to the odours of predators
Article Abstract:
Research shows that field voles and bank voles reduce their activity when exposed to the odour of terrestrial mammal predators, but no testing has been done on water voles whose predators include weasels, otters and polecats. A new study investigates water vole response to the odours of predators. Water voles exposed to odours from brown rats and the American mink avoided the brown rat's odour less than the mink's odour. It is suggested that the water voles' response to mink odours, to which they had no previous exposure, is innate.

Causes and consequences of natal dispersal in root voles, Microtus oeconomus
Article Abstract:
Several matrilines of the root voles, Microtus oeconomus, were released in field enclosures during nine consecutive periods to examine the causes and consequences of variation in natal dispersal within the specie. Results showed that dispersal pattern exhibited by male voles and long-distance dispersal by females were due to inbreeding avoidance. The short-distance dispersal by females was attributed to resource competition.

Effects of isolation on sibling recognition in prairie voles, Microtus ochrogaster
Article Abstract:
Sibling recognition in prairie voles has been presumed because of lack of reproduction among littermates, with previous studies showing that isolating sibling prairie voles causes incest avoidance to fail. A new study re-evaluates previous research and shows that incest avoidance may not be the best principle for judging sibling recognition. Details of the study are presented.
