The 'species alias' problem
Article Abstract:
The issue of multiple names for single biological entities is important for biodiversity studies. Synonymy is lower among vertebrates and global estimates of diversity should be decreased to remove misunderstanding. The synonymy rates for mammalian orders are positively related to body size and unrelated to ordinal diversity. The increase in synonyms is due to the systematic classification system and the emphasis on taxa diagnosis rather than reproductive limits. The synonyms among less widely studied organisms is probably unintentional.

Species extinction and the relationship between distribution and abundance
Article Abstract:
In taxonomic groups the positive relationship between size of geographic range and local species abundance is observed. The pattern is of interest but the hypotheses proposed as causes of it do not take into account the effect of extinction of rare species on range abundance relationships. An experiment using Australian marsupials shows a positive relationship between range size and local abundance in recently evolved species, it is negative for ancient species.

Fission-track ages of stone tools and fossils on the ast Indonesian island of Flores
Article Abstract:
Zircon fission-track dates are reported from two fossil sites on the Wallacean island of Flores. Tangi Talo and Mata Menge are located in the Ola Bula Formation of the upper Ae Sissa River basin. Tangi Talo has an endemic fauna and dates to 0.90 plus or minus 0.07 Myr BP, while Mata Menge dates to between 0.88 plus or minus 0.07 and 0.80 plus or minus 0.07 Myr BP, and stone tools were found with elements of continental Southeast Asian fauna.
