Threatened beetles in white-backed woodpecker habitats
Article Abstract:
The white-backed woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucotos) could act as an umbrella species to protect threatened saproxylic beetle species (Coleoptera) in the same habitat. A survey in Finland and Russian Karelia of potential breeding forests for the woodpeckers found 16 threatened beetle species. The beetles as well as the woodpeckers rely on decaying wood. Conservation efforts for the woodpecker could thus also benefit the threatened beetles.

Genetics and general cognitive ability
Article Abstract:
General cognitive ability (g) predicts social outcomes such as educational and occupational levels. It is one of the most heritable behavioural traits and it is likely that genes contributing to the heritability of g will be identified. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) that contribute probabilistically to individual differences in the normal variation in g are polymorphic.

Cognitive abilities related to tool use in the woodpecker finch, Cactospiza pallida
Article Abstract:
The cognitive abilities associated with tool use by the woodpecker finch are examined. Woodpecker finches are famous for their spontaneous tool use behaviour in the wild as they use twigs or cactus spines to pry arthropods out of cervices.
