Too hot for earthquakes?
Article Abstract:
Some subduction zones are seismically active and cause earthquakes, while some others are quiescent. The Cascadia subduction zone, which extends along the coast from northern California to southern British Columbia, is one such area which has geological evidence of possible earthquakes. Tichelaar, Ruff, Hyndman and Wang attempted to discover the reason for the lack of earthquakes in this region in recent times. They suggest the narrow seismic zone as a possible reason.

Evidence from earthquakes for bookshelf faulting at large non-transform ridge offsets
Article Abstract:
A bookshelf faulting model for migrating non-transform models is presented. The model involves a series of faults at a high initial angle to the shear couple. Source mechanisms for 27 earthquakes were observed and these were found to be consistent with the bookshelf model. On the other hand, the said mechanisms were inconsistent with the previously proposed instantaneous and distributed transform models of segment deformation.

Remote triggering of deep earthquakes in the 2002 Tonga sequences
Article Abstract:
This article examines the Tonga deep earthquake and its after effects. Results show that both static and dynamic triggering as the cause of the earthquake and the time of the triggered events do not match with the arrival times of the main seismic waves. Data indicate that the seismic events are the result of transient effects in regions near criticality.
