Turning a corner in vision research
Article Abstract:
The vertical orientation columns spanning the entire depth of the primary visual cortex that are formed by neurons that prefer the same orientation as close neighbours are used to analyze angular visual features in the context of a scene. The connections between the columns have a suppressive role and could be used to analyze angular visual features such as T junctions or corners. This research adds a new element to the view that the response field of a neuron in the primary visual cortex reflects the functional state of an extended cortical network.

No role for colour in symmetry perception
Article Abstract:
The mechanisms of symmetry perception seem to be inherently colour-blind. It is only possible to verify colour symmetry by moving attention from one colour to the next and analyzing the symmetry of regions of that colour. It thus appears that attentional gating must occur earlier in the visual pathway than symmetry detection. This finding backs up earlier research about motion perception, in which it was found that voluntary attention to a feature allows information to be gated before its analysis by motion-perception mechanisms.
