Twists of fate in the brain
Article Abstract:
Tracking cells by gene expression helps in finding out how the complex array of cell types and functions in the mammalian brain develop and how their fates are derived from organization within the simple embryonic neural tube. The new genetic approaches in mice allow cell fates to be correlated with gene-expression domains in both normal and mutant embryos, which in turn give a clear picture of the molecules that regulate cellular fate throughout the embryo.

The microRNA miR-196 acts upstream of Hoxb8 and Shh in limb development
Article Abstract:
The microRNA miR-196 acts upstream of Hoxb8 and Sonic hedgehog (Shh) in the context of limb development and identifies previously observed but uncharacterized inhibitory activity that operates in the hindlimb. The miRNA-196 functions in a safe mechanism to assure the fidelity of expression domains that are primarily regulated at the transcriptional level which support the idea that many vertebrate miRNAs may function as a secondary level of gene regulation.

Asymmetrical threat averted
Article Abstract:
Somites are embryonic elements that give rise to the muscles, skeleton and some skin layers of the trunk in human body. An attempt is made to show that somite formation proceeds in a bilaterally synchronized fashion and, asymmetry, which is necessary for the physiological function of many organs.
