Two-note syllables in canary songs elicit high levels of sexual display
Article Abstract:
Special phrases from the repertoire of eight male canaries were tested against female conspecifics to determine the effect of the phrase on female sexual responsiveness. The phrase consists of repetitions of a short, complex two-note syllable referred to as A phrase. Results reveal that five of the eight A phrases studied elicited sexual display behavior in females. These results suggest that the syllables in the phrase may be indicative of male physical condition and suitability for mating.

Behavior-genetic analysis of canary song: inter-strain differences in sensory learning, and epigenetic rules
Article Abstract:
The genetic basis of song-learning preferences in Serinus canaria was investigated using genetic breeding and social learning experiment. It was shown that Roller and Border canaries differ in song learning preferences and that strain-dependent learning preferences are genetically heritable. Early exposure to an alien-strain female parent did not have any impact on the development of song learning preferences.

Local enhancement and seed choice in the juvenile canary, Serinus canarius
Article Abstract:
A study of the feeding behavior of the father canary on juvenile canaries reveals that juveniles show preferences for the food selected by the parent canaries. The juveniles spontaneously picked up on canary seeds whereas they ingested more oats only when these seeds were available to their fathers. Choice of seeds made by juveniles were influenced by their father's choice only in the case of the oat seeds.
