UK gets the green light on modified crops
Article Abstract:
Two potentially influential reports have concluded that only negligible risks to human health and the environment are posed by certain genetically modified crops. One report, from the government's Scientific Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment (ACRE) said it was safe to plant herbicide-tolerant oilseed rape. Another report, following a House of Lords inquiry into the European Community's regulatory system of genetic modification in agriculture, opposes calls for a moratorium on the commercialization of genetically modified crops. The report does call for the rapid end to the use of antibiotic marker genes and states that EU countries should be able to opt out of growing genetically modified crops.

Off-track careers
Article Abstract:
New employment opportunities are arising for scientists as the traditional division between the academic world and industry becomes less marked. There are now a number of schemes which aim to encourage scientists to gain experience of the world of business, for example, and scientists are even being helped to set up small businesses. Scientists who do not wish to enter business could consider opportunities with the Consultative Group on International Agriculture Research, an international network of research centres, or in plant-science research in developing countries.
